In case you read yesterday's post and didn't get the chance to check out my "Beauty and Wisdom" project on my website, here is a little glimpse of the work I did. This is "Elizabeth" and I made this photograph in Brantley, AL. Elizabeth was in her late 80's when I took this photo in 2009. (Thank you to @r.s._henry for the great assistance and companionship on this leg of the photo journey) A couple of years ago, I was contacted by her daughters and grandaughter and it was the most heart warming correspondence... Here is an excerpt from that email: "I was recently doing some online research on the small Southern town, Brantley, Alabama. While viewing some of the images, i came across a photo of my beloved grandmother, Elizabeth Henderson seated under the hair dryer out at "Miss Sheila's" Beauty Parlor. I had never seen this photo and after some investigation discovered your blog.To my huge surprise, I then discovered that you had written a book and had photo exhibitions that included my Grandmother. I was so excited to see her image, and read your beautiful words and thoughts about her. I have spent the last couple of days reading every article, interview, press release, and mere mention that I can locate on Beauty and Wisdom. I immediately ordered the book and anxiously await its arrival. Sadly, we lost Grandmother December of 2014." Elizabeth transitioned at age 100. What an honor to have memorialized her beauty, her life.

In 2016, I had the privilege of giving a talk at the C Gallery in Los Alamos, CA about "Beauty and Wisdom," a photojournalism project I worked on for many years, starting in 2009. I drove around the country interviewing older women about their views on many things, including the way older women were seen in our country. I loved, and still love, being an advocate for older women, who have been under-acknowledged in our society... for many years... and how wonderful was it, to see RBG made such a HUGE impact on our society, not just for women, but for all. This subject resonated with so many it garnered 23k followers on twitter in a very short time... this was so exhilarating... to know that it touched so many people and provoked some thought about this concept. I was invited to do many interviews including ones on Yahoo and mashable. In this talk at C Gallery, I spoke about my dream to see these women on a billboard someday... and in 2018, that dream came true as they are now displayed publicly, in Seattle WA.

There's something about Autumn that makes me remin

There's something about Autumn that makes me reminisce more times than in other seasons. Not sure why that is. Maybe it's a time of deeper reflection as we head toward the winter... when things become dormant or fall away? It's a good time to think about how far we've come. I need to be reminded to remember my victories, my achievements, my growth....as well as my mistakes that I've learned from and continue to grow from. I love learning about life, about art, my soul, my husband, my family and I'm grateful I get to work with great coaches, @adventureswithpam and @curatoronthego. If you too are interested in working with them, give them a dm and reach out. Plan the coming year with support and guidance and camaraderie. Thank you to @christinaneferis for taking this action photograph about 3 years ago... your talents continue to amaze me.

It's hard to believe that my solo show at The @bri

It's hard to believe that my solo show at The @brittanydavisgallery took place over a year ago. So much has happened since then. This was such a wonderful memory. I miss the openings and connecting with art enthusiasts and fellow artists. I was so happy to show 'The Knightess,' which took me over a year to complete. I love the concept of slaying our dragons. Now that I'm older, I think of the slaying as more of an acceptance... a sort of slaying with a letting go and love, rather than defiance and defensiveness. "The Knightess" is 4 x 6 feet. It has an actual crystal saber and is created with resin and acrylic paint on black aluminum. See close up and saber in my story!
