Proud Mary

Raw From The Road, June 28, 2016

Left a good job in the city
Workin’ for the man ev’ry night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleepin’
Worryin’ ’bout the way things might have been
Big wheel keep on turnin’
Proud Mary keep on burnin’

I had one of those happy experiments this week.

For almost a year, I’ve been holding on to a toy tire that I ordered but never used because it wasn’t a motorcycle tire.

I can be a little too strict with myself, cutting off possibilities in the interim.

Case in point.

Finally yesterday I broke open the package of the little toy, broke it apart so I could roll it.. applied paint, rolled, applied paint, rolled, applied paint, rolled and you get the gist.

At first, I stopped after just a few strokes thinking I liked the wood sticking out, or the background canvas, which was created with motorcycle tires and paint.

As I continued, I felt like I was having a love affair with color.

We were in agreement and then we weren’t, I need more and made it worse, then made it better.

I put it (the painting) aside and waited, it needed time… I gave it time… then suggested the solution… it was purple.

I turned to my artist friends for advice (as women do)…asking how I could make things better?

They told me, I followed and in the end, we lived happily.

All that to say that this little 4×4 piece of wood and a 14×14 wood panel is now covered in layers and layers of paint… some colors only showing up once because once… was enough.

Gold Fern

Twice would be overkill.

Painting a layer and putting it down, then picking it up to see what it was calling out for… listening with my eyes…. Sometimes, major miscommunication… other times, complete harmony and a feeling of sweet satisfaction.

It’s as if I had a crash course on color and how each one affects another, expanding my palette of understanding colors more.

I have so much more to learn and I can’t wait.

I really enjoy the process of learning about color, even if it means sometimes coming up with some pretty hideous results…. Uh, I will be staying away from muted yellows as I have ruined canvases twice now trying to create that golden hay color that is all around me here in the country… maybe one day we’ll get it together…for now, there are other paints in the palette.

Happy experimenting!

BTW- These pieces are heading to Spain for The Cabal Creative group exhibit in Chite!  Stay tuned for more info on that.
